Open Research Seminar (Spring 2023)

Seminar   |   Mar 09 2023 - Apr 20 2023

The CEGA-managed Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (BITSS) is excited to announce the Spring 2023 Open Research Seminar (ORS), a webinar series to promote and share knowledge about the use of tools and practices for transparency and reproducibility in social science research. The ORS will be an opportunity for researchers to showcase applications of specific tools and practices (e.g., developing a lab protocol for reproducibility, building a website to catalog open datasets, etc.) or evaluations of the effectiveness of existing tools and practices (e.g., results-blind peer review and publication bias). All webinars will be free and open to register to the general public.

We elicit proposals from researchers, practitioners, and students to present their work as part of the four webinars, which will take place March-April, 2023.

All webinars will be recorded, published on the BITSS YouTube channel, and included in the BITSS Resource Library, a publicly available collection of learning materials. Presenters should also consider archiving their materials on MetaArXiv or the OSF, as appropriate. The organizer of each session will be offered a $500 honorarium.

Scope

Eligible topics include but are not limited to research ethics, pre-registration, data sharing, reproducibility, evidence synthesis, diversity and equity in research, innovations in peer review, open access, and software for research collaboration. Successful proposals will involve interactive sessions that offer diverse perspectives and are relevant across several disciplines. All sessions will be fully virtual, limited to up to 90 minutes, and leverage one of the following formats:

  • Tutorial, where one or more presenters demonstrate the utility of a specific research tool or practice using an example or a case study.
  • Debate, where a moderator facilitates a discussion between 2-4 discussants with distinct or opposing perspectives on one or more eligible topics.
  • Panel, where presenters exchange knowledge and experiences on a broad topic related to open research with participation from the audience.
  • Research presentation, where presenters share the results of empirical research projects studying an eligible topic. Presenters will be encouraged to allocate time for discussion.

Eligibility and Evaluation Criteria

Submissions are welcome from researchers at all career levels (from undergraduate to faculty-level) across the social and behavioral sciences. We strongly encourage proposals from early career researchers. Eligible submissions include completed projects, work in progress, and prospective work.

The BITSS team, with support from previous Catalysts and the partners at the UC Berkeley Library, will evaluate proposals based on (i) the quality and relevance of application materials, (ii) novelty of approach, and (iii) balance across disciplines, gender, and institutions (while focusing on facilitating access for diverse and underserved populations).

Application Process

Submit a brief application on our online portal hereThe application includes an abstract and presentation plan describing how you will engage with participants (<1 page), and information about the organizer and other participants.

Timeline

Please submit your application no later than Friday, December 23, 2022. We aim to notify selected speakers in January 2023. Webinars will take place on a monthly basis starting in early March 2023.

The Open Research Seminar is hosted thanks to the generous support provided by the Templeton World Charity Foundation.
