Access to agricultural technology, information, and financial services can help move millions of smallholder farmers out of poverty.

CEGA Work Sector - Agriculture

Motivation

Agricultural development remains one of the cornerstones of the fight against global poverty. However, some of the most essential components of productive farming systems – including access to credit, insurance, agricultural inputs, and markets – underperform throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. CEGA collaborates with donors, businesses, international NGOs, and local organizations to identify the projects and strategies that most successfully unlock the potential of agriculture across the developing world. The ongoing threat of climate change increases the urgency of our work, with small farming communities—including a disproportionate number of women and girls—among the most vulnerable to heavy rainfall, drought, pests, and other environmental changes. Ultimately, CEGA seeks to generate rigorous evidence that can improve decision-making on the part of key agricultural stakeholders while improving outcomes for smallholder farmers.

Initiatives

Agricultural Technology Adoption Initiative

In collaboration with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), CEGA leads the Agricultural Technology Adoption Initiative (ATAI), a transformative research program that has, over nine successive funding rounds, generated important insights used to guide agricultural investments in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. To date, ATAI has sponsored more than 50 randomized evaluations in 17 countries, leveraging the expertise of 50 implementing partners and more than 100 faculty...

Digital Agricultural Innovations and Services Initiative

The Digital Agricultural Innovations and Services Initiative (DAISI) funds research to rigorously evaluate programs that increase the availability, quality, and reach of bundled digital agricultural solutions and services for small-scale agricultural producers. In collaboration with the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), we aim to generate a rigorous evidence base that carefully identifies whether digital tools and bundled approaches are successful in improving smallholder farmer...
