Behavioral Sensing: New Technology Solutions for Data Collection in Development Research

Seminar   |   past event  |  Dec 02 2014

Recent technology breakthroughs are offering unique opportunities to collect data with greater accuracy, reliability, and frequency than ever before. Research in global development and poverty alleviation – which too often relies on cumbersome, expensive, and unreliable data collection techniques, prone to measurement errors and reporting bias – is now catching up with this trend.

Over the past two years, the Behavioral Sensing Workgroup has helped develop innovative strategies for data collection in development research. Combining expertise from engineering and social science, the program has supported the design and testing of a number of new approaches to capture the behavior of individuals in resource-constrained settings, including through low-cost environmental sensors, microsatellite imagery, and mobile-phone based tools.

This seminar will feature the work of our 2014 grantees, building on an interdisciplinary skill set to generate demand-driven solutions to development challenges.
