2020 WGAPE Rapid Research Grant Competition: Request for Proposals
The Working Group in African Political Economy will award grants to junior African researchers for rapid research projects and pair awardees with senior researchers from the WGAPE network.
The annual in-person WGAPE meeting, originally scheduled for July in Addis Ababa, was cancelled due to COVID-19 and has moved virtual. We are repurposing those conference funds to support junior researchers. WGAPE seeks to support junior African researchers with grants for research projects that can be executed rapidly using secondary data, or that use primary data collected in accordance with restrictions on in-person contact (e.g., phone surveys). We are looking for early stage, shovel ready projects that will lead to a new working paper before the end of 2020. WGAPE has approximately $20,000 to grant, and expects to make 3-5 awards. Funding can be used to support the investigators’ time, research assistance, phone survey costs, data purchase or storage, and other reasonable research expenses.
Successful applicants will be paired with a senior researcher, most likely among the WGAPE organizers or executive committee, who will provide some feedback and general guidance on the project. The lead investigator of each successful project may be invited to participate and present during the 2020 Virtual WGAPE Meeting in late July or during a future WGAPE meeting.
