Isabel Madzorera

Isabel Madzorera, ScD, MS is an Assistant Professor in Public Health Nutrition at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Madzorera is a nutrition epidemiologist and global nutrition researcher, and she conducts multi-faceted research that assists in understanding the determinants of poor maternal and child nutrition outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). She works on the nexus of food systems, diets, and maternal and child health nutrition, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.

The goals of her research program are to utilize advanced nutrition epidemiologic methods to assess diet quality as a key modifiable risk factor for poor maternal and child health outcomes, and to identify the role of food systems in the triple burden of malnutrition in these contexts, including increasing non-communicable diseases. Her previous research has included evaluating the role of maternal diet quality during pregnancy and its impacts on the risk of poor birth outcomes (e.g., low birth weight, preterm) and early child growth, assessing how COVID-19 has impacted food prices and diets, and understanding how food crop diversity and women’s empowerment affect diet quality in SSA. Dr. Madzorera has extensive field-based experience in sub-Saharan Africa.
