Ben Gomes
Senior Vice President, Google
Ben leads the Learning & Sustainability organization at Google, and is also an advisor to the Google Search organization. He oversees teams focused on harnessing technology to scale learning and education via Google’s products, and the company’s efforts to combat climate change.
The Learning team supports educators and learners around the world with products including Google Classroom, Google Scholar, Google Arts and Culture, and an AI-based tutoring app – ReadAlong. They are also creating academic and learning experiences on Google Search and YouTube.
The Sustainability efforts at Google span every product area in the company from research to data centers. In order to meet Google’s NetZero and carbon saving ambitions, the team brings together efforts from around the company – from decarbonizing data centers to research on new technologies (e.g. contrail reductions) to providing useful information for decision making through Google’s products (e.g. eco routing in Maps).
As one of Google’s first principal engineers and an early Google Fellow, Ben worked on search for 20 years, eventually leading the Google Search organization, which included Google Search, Assistant and News.
Prior to joining Google, Ben earned his BS in Computer Engineering from Case Western University in Ohio and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UC Berkeley. He was born in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania and was raised in Bangalore, India.
