PSDP

The Primary School Deworming Project (PSDP) was carried out in Busia, Kenya by Internationaal Christelijk Steunfonds (ICS) starting in 1998 in cooperation with the Busia District Ministry of Health and our research team, with funding support from the World Bank. The program randomly divided 75 schools into three equal sized groups which were phased into deworming treatment over three years. Click here to access the PSDP data.

KLPS-1

The Kenya Life Panel Survey, Round 1 (KLPS-1), collected during 2003-2005, contains follow-up survey information on education, health, and demographic and economic outcomes among a representative subset of individuals who participated in the Primary School Deworming Program. From the start of the KLPS, individuals were tracked for surveys wherever they had moved, in order to reduce sample attrition, and this has continued across all survey rounds. The project has benefited from NIH funding since KLPS-1. Click here to access the KLPS-1 Data.

KLPS-2

The Kenya Life Panel Survey, Round 2 (KLPS-2), collected during 2007-2009, contains further follow-up survey information for the same representative subset of PSDP participants, now at roughly 10 years since the start of the PSDP. This round featured more detailed labor market and economic measures than KLPS-1. Click here to access the KLPS-2 Data.

KLPS-3

The Kenya Life Panel Survey, Round 3 (KLPS-3), collected during 2011-2014, contains survey information for the same subset of the PSDP sample, as well as survey information on participants in the 2001-2002 Girls’ Scholarship Program (GSP) from Busia District. Click here to access the KLPS-3 data.

KLPS-4

The Kenya Life Panel Survey, Round 4 (KLPS-4), collected during 2017-2022, contains follow-up survey information the same representative subset of PSDP participants as in earlier KLPS rounds, as well as survey information on participants in an earlier vocational training intervention or cash transfer intervention in Busia District. In this round, the study collected detailed household consumption expenditure data – a high-quality measure of living standards – from the full sample for the first time, as well as data on a representative sample of the children of the main sample respondents.  Click here to access the KLPS-4 data.

KLPS-5

The Kenya Life Panel Survey, Round 5 (KLPS-5) data collection is ongoing and is scheduled to span from 2023 to 2026. It is being collected among the same individuals as in KLPS-4. In this round, the study is collecting detailed aging related health and cognitive measures (locally adapted from the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol), Dried Blood Spots (DBS) and other biomarkers, as well as exposome measures (including air pollution exposure) from the full sample for the first time. Data collection among the representative sample of children continues, creating a panel dataset of the children. (All data will be posted after data collection has been completed.)

Additional Data

Beyond the KLPS data listed above, we have also posted replication data for several of the individual publications that utilize KLPS data (for instance, for the Alfonsi et al. 2024 study in the Journal of Development Economics “Human capital affects religious identity: Causal evidence from Kenya”, among many others.)
