Investing in local research talent is key to catalyzing evidence-driven policy change around the world.
The credibility and impact of evidence for decision-making is greatly bolstered by the participation of local scholars, who are motivated and well-placed to identify and address development challenges in their own countries. Absent their voices, even the most rigorous research can lose relevance and fail to translate into policy action, inhibiting important development goals. CEGA’s Global Networks program invests in research capacity strengthening that empowers LMIC scholars to generate credible evidence for policy in their home countries and regions. Through semester-long fellowships at UC Berkeley, scholars audit development economics courses, present their work at seminars, apply to competitive funding opportunities, receive faculty and peer mentorship, and connect with faculty and students across the CEGA network. In addition, the Global Networks team organizes conferences to disseminate locally-generated research, funds collaborative research, connects fellows with policy makers and other partners, and hosts events for LMIC scholars to deliver and receive feedback on working papers. Global Networks is also taking an active role in understanding and shaping inclusion in the evidence ecosystem through the Collaboration for Inclusive Development Research (CIDR).
CEGA has launched a new resource for African scholars to advance inclusion in global development research called the CIDR Opportunity Hub (CO-Hub).
