Privacy Playbook Webinar Series

Governments, NGOs, and private sector organizations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) increasingly rely on sensitive data to deliver social welfare programs, target humanitarian aid and development assistance, and drive policy decisions — yet conventional approaches to protecting that data often fall short of modern privacy standards. Privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) offer a path forward, enabling the analysis and sharing of sensitive data without compromising individual privacy, but adoption has been held back by limited awareness, technical capacity, and a lack of practical guidance tailored to real-world conditions, particularly in LMIC contexts.

CEGA’s Data Privacy Lab is working to close this gap. This webinar series introduces the Privacy Playbook, a Gates Foundation supported initiative that will draw on real world deployments of PETs to give policymakers and technical staff clear, actionable guidance on selecting and implementing privacy-preserving approaches for their specific needs. Join us to learn more about the Privacy Playbook initiative, and the use cases informing it, and how your organization can engage as the Lab builds out this resource through 2027.

The first webinar, A Gentle Introduction to Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) and the Privacy Playbook Initiative, will take place on May 28 at 8am PST. Register to attend here.

Speakers

  • Nitin Kohli is a Staff Scientist at CEGA and Principal Investigator of the Data Privacy Lab, researching topics that span privacy, fairness, and manipulability of statistical and algorithmic mechanisms. Nitin utilizes techniques from applied mathematics to construct statistical and algorithmic mechanisms with provable guarantees over the outcomes of their use, and to show the inherent limitations present in certain technologies. As part of this research agenda, Nitin has developed novel privacy-enhancing technologies for humanitarian, anti-poverty, and financial inclusion initiatives.
  • Tanner Lewis is a Senior Officer at the Gates Foundation, focused on developing strategy and managing investments for the foundation’s Digital Public Infrastructure team. Tanner’s portfolio focuses on scaling safe and inclusive data sharing systems in low- and middle-income countries.
