CEGA generates innovative research that decision makers use to reduce global poverty.

The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) is a hub for research, training, and innovation headquartered at the University of California, Berkeley. We generate insights that leaders can use to improve policies, programs, and people’s lives. Our academic network includes nearly 200 faculty, 80 scholars from low- and middle-income countries, and hundreds of graduate students — from diverse academic disciplines around the world — that produce rigorous evidence about what works to expand education, health, and economic opportunities for people living in poverty.

CEGA’s mission is to improve the lives of people living in poverty by generating insights and tools for decision-makers backed by rigorous, inclusive, and transparent research.

We invest in new types of data, partnerships, and analytical approaches to address complex economic and social challenges.

We use ideas, methods, and insights from a wide range of academic disciplines, including economics, psychology, public health, business, engineering, and computer science.

We support novel research collaborations between academics, practitioners, and policymakers around the globe, including North America, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Working equitably with scholars and partners primarily in low- and middle-income countries, we:

  • Identify where rigorous research about social and economic development programs is needed;
  • Invest in new tools, techniques, and teams of researchers;
  • Elevate low- and middle-income country scholars, women, and other underrepresented groups across our work;
  • Promote meaningful collaboration between researchers and policymakers;
  • Build scholars’ skills and capabilities to produce policy-relevant evidence and communications; and
  • Share research and insights with key decision-makers and the public.

Our values inform and guide our work.
