The Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) is a hub for research on global development, with a network of over 75 academic researchers extending across the University of California, Stanford University, and the University of Washington. Our faculty affiliates design and test solutions for the problems of poverty, generating actionable evidence for policy-makers in less developed countries. Using rigorous field trials, behavioral experiments, and tools from data science, we measure and maximize the impacts of economic development programs throughout the world.
The Center’s research is organized by initiatives. In 2012, CEGA established the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (BITSS), with a mission of strengthening the quality of social science research and evidence used for policy-making. BITSS is now an established leader in the movement for openness, integrity, and reproducibility in social science research.

CEGA seeks a motivated Program Associate to support BITSS. This is a challenging opportunity for candidates who are passionate about social science research; want to contribute to positive change within the scientific community; and have a strong desire to expand and deepen their skills in project management, strategic planning, and partnership development.
The BITSS Program Associate will support a general administration and contribute to a new project implemented in partnership with the Journal of Development Economics facilitating a results-blind review. The incumbent will be a proactive team player with project management experience and knowledge of the research process.
This is a 1 year, full time, contract position (with the possibility of extension).
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conduct research on results-blind review procedures and journal best practices, including a literature review and interviews with journal editors.
- Support dissemination of research and BITSS activities to policymakers and partners, including conceptualizing briefing materials and managing their production, authoring content for initiative blogs, drafting reports on best practices, monitoring media coverage, and managing relationships with relevant stakeholders.
- Support performance management by gathering and analyzing administrative and other resource data, preparing reports and/or analyses, suggesting changes in program design based on metrics, and contributing to program performance narratives.
- Assist with BITSS events management including developing timelines, budgets, agenda, and materials; coordinating media capture; overseeing logistics.
- Support program development, including grant-writing and monitoring and evaluation activities.
- Develop expertise in research transparency subject matter (publication bias; p-hacking; pre-analysis plans; selective reporting; reporting guidelines; reproducibility; open data); stay up-to-date on relevant research and policy developments.
- Participate in center-wide activities, including maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs), process documentation, internal work groups, and performance management.
- BA/BS in Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Health, Public Policy, or related field with 1-2 years of relevant professional experience.
- Previous quantitative research experience
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of evidence-based policy-making.
- Self-directed, intrinsically motivated; proven capacity to manage work independently, multitask and be responsive to time-sensitive deadlines.
- Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-anticipation and -solving, and customer service; ability to independently investigate solutions to challenges and anticipate leadership needs.
- Well-organized, with strong administrative skills and outstanding attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong and effective interpersonal skills in working with colleagues at all levels. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work diplomatically with diverse constituencies.
- Ability to contribute to remaining flexible and able to adapt to change.
- Strong competency with MS Office (including solid understanding of Excel) and Google applications (such as Google Forms).
- MA/MS in Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Health, Public Policy, or related field
- Familiarity with journal review processes
- Sense of humor with a positive attitude in approaching challenges and uncertainty
