Events & Communications Associate


CEGA is a hub for research on global development, with a network of over 70 academic researchers extending across the University of California, Stanford University, and the University of Washington. Our mission is to improve development outcomes for people in low- and middle-income countries by providing decision-makers with new ideas and insights based on transparent, scientific research. We design and test innovative programs in rural development, health, finance, energy, and other sectors. We advance new methods for program evaluation, drawing on tools from behavioral science, data science, and remote sensing. We also invest in the leadership of young researchers in developing countries, to strengthen their voices in policy debates and facilitate the local use of evidence.

We are looking for a self-directed and pro-active event coordinator who can confidently manage logistics and communications for local and international conferences, workshops, and other convenings. As Events & Communications Associate, you will be the center's primary resource and point person for event planning, contracting, on-site coordination and staffing, videography/media, communications, and follow-up. You will also help develop and streamline internal processes related to events and external communications. Your contributions will allow CEGA to better share our research findings, build research capacity around the world, and forge relationships with policy-makers and other important stakeholders.

We are looking for someone with some prior events management expertise. Ideally you are also familiar with international development and/or social science research, with the ability to comprehend and clearly explain academic work for a public audience. The position will work with staff, students, and faculty across the Center to develop multimedia content, disseminate through social media, monitor press coverage, and manage website operations. You should have poise and experience communicating and connecting with a variety of actors—from vendors and media outlets, to non-profits and researchers. 

An employment term of at least two years is expected for this position.

  • Events Management (45%): Lead logistical support for all CEGA events (program-specific and center-wide) including venue, catering, and speaker/participant travel, and advise on communications and outreach strategy. Serve as the point-person for center-wide events, including design and management of timelines, budgets, print materials, volunteers, and communication strategies, with input from key stakeholders. Oversee event logistics with “tone” in mind. Establish and maintain event webpages, coordinate video and other media capture, and manage press and social media coverage. Process travel and purchase reimbursements, ensure that vendor invoices are paid, and take responsibility for other post-event administrative activities, including process documentation.
  • Content Development & Management (30%): Coordinate the production of the center’s monthly public newsletter, bulletins, and blog. Solicit, edit, and compile materials from staff to produce professional outputs on short timelines. Assist in the development and dissemination of multimedia content and print collateral for our programs and events. Manage CEGA’s website by keeping the homepage current, clear, and engaging. Collaborate with colleagues on development of a new Center websites or features/upgrades. Build up and maintain CEGA’s photo and media library. Also manage CEGA’s Working Paper Series, which involves soliciting and posting new content from staff and faculty affiliates.
  • Media Monitoring and Engagement (15%): Create and share a variety of content through CEGA’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, blogs, and other outlets. Identify key opportunities for CEGA to respond to breaking news or hot topics. Analyze, report and respond to social media activity and trends. Track media mentions of CEGA and provide media reports to program staff.  Track web analytics and report metrics to better understand our user groups and audience.
  • Press Strategy (10%): Identify contacts for media outlets and proactively maintain contact lists in Salesforce. Organize periodic updates with customized content for priority groups. Circulate Center press releases, briefings, op-eds and other media materials and “pitch” to journalists as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in social sciences, communications, marketing, design, or other related field.
  • Strong organizational skills and events management experience is required. We're looking for someone who problem solves, thinks creatively, is flexible, and can remain cool and collected in the face of uncertainty.
  • Poise and composure during events is essential. You know how to keep a high-level event running smoothly, by responding to last minute requests, making guests or participants feel welcome, and helping volunteers do their best work. You can connect and relate to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong ability to anticipate, plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Capacity to handle multiple projects at once, effectively manage time, and interface confidently with co-workers. Ability to manage a time-sensitive workflow while maintaining absolute accuracy with details.
  • Relevant communications experience and a demonstrated interest in evidence-based policy-making. You should have advanced writing skills with precise, clear, and vibrant language.
  • Self-motivated, hard worker who enjoys working in teams. Everything you'll do relies on inputs from peers and partners!
  • Quick learner and entrepreneurial problem solver who can identify areas for improvement to make critical systems run more smoothly.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and discretion, exhibit good judgment when sharing news and information publicly.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to change.
  • Eye for design and style, both in web and in print.

Desired Qualifications

  • Some training or understanding of economics, social policy, and impact evaluation is preferred.
  • Experience with In-Design or other design programs a plus.
