The Privatization of Water and its Impact on Child Mortality in Argentina

Development Challenge

Between 1991 and 1999, public water companies servicing about one-third of Argentinean municipalities were transferred to private control. Privatization of the water supply was expected to lower costs, enhance efficiency, improve service quality and expand access to water services. Better service quality and increased access to water services would in turn lead to an improvement in the epidemiological environment and thus lower water related diseases, especially amongst children who are most prone to them.

Evaluation Strategy

Using difference in difference estimates and matching techniques, the variation across time and space in the ownership of water provision is estimated.
