BITSS held the second international Research Transparency and Reproducibility Training (RT2) in Amsterdam, Netherlands April 4-6, 2018.

RT2 provides participants with an overview of tools and best practices for transparent and reproducible social science research. The curriculum is developed and delivered by academic leaders in the transparency movement, and space is provided for collaborative work and hands-on skill building. Participants are encouraged to bring existing research questions and ideas based on their own interests to seek support and feedback from instructors and other attendees.

Participants can expect to finish the program with a thorough overview and understanding of best practices for open, reproducible research, allowing them to remain in the vanguard of new scientific frontiers.

Formerly known as the Summer Institute, RT2 includes more hands-on sessions incorporating new tools to facilitate research transparency. In addition to interactive sessions, participants will also be provided a Reading Packet prior to their arrival.

Faculty: Garret Christensen (BITSS, BIDS), Marjan Bakker (Tilburg University), Sean Grant (Rand Corporation), Fernando Hoces de la Guardia (BITSS), Nicole Janz (University of Nottingham), Thomas Leeper (London School of Economics and Political Science), Michèle Nuijten (Tilburg University), Arnaud Vaganay (Meta-Lab), Robbie Van Aert (Tilburg University), Coosje Veldkamp (VU University Medical Center), EJ Wagenmakers (University of Amsterdam), and more!

Eligibility
RT2 is designed for researchers from across the social sciences, with particular emphasis on economics, political science, and psychology. Ideal candidates include (i) PhD and Masters students, (ii) postdocs, (iii) junior faculty, (iv) research staff from organizations interested in using these methods, and (v) journal editors or research funders curious about the implications for their work. Diversity in terms of background and academic discipline is encouraged. Participants with experience using R or Stata are likely to get more out of this training than those without.

Application Process
Apply online here. Applications should also include the following supporting materials:

  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume
  • Cover Letter including a) why you are interested in the workshop, b) how you might use what you learn to improve transparency practices of other social scientists, c) whether you will need financial support to attend the institute, and d) your current professional status
  • Letter of Reference (optional)

Fee and Financial Support
There are no tuition fees for this workshop. Participant travel support is available for selected participants who indicate need in their application. Participants are expected to bring their own (or loaned) wifi-enabled laptop to the workshop.

Application Deadline
The closing date for applications is 11:59 PM January 31, 2018 PST (8:59AM 1 February CET). Notifications of acceptance will be sent no later than February 8, 2018*.

Selection Process
BITSS aims to select no more than 40 participants. With this in mind, the number of applications to RT2 usually exceeds the number of available spaces. BITSS staff will lead the competitive selection process with oversight from the BITSS Scientific Director. Final selection will be based on the quality of application materials, taking into account specific motivations and objectives for participation in RT2, balance across disciplines, gender, and universities, and synergies with other Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) initiatives.

*Note: This notification date was changed from February 7, 2018 due to a higher than predicted volume of applications.
